Be Aware of the Civilian Abuse in Syria
Numerous and serious human rights violations were reported by the United Nations to happen during the Syrian civil war. Further, the reports of the United Nations described the war as Syrian terror or a “complete lack of adherence to the norms of international law by warring parties” leading to “caused civilians immeasurable suffering”.
Most of the abuses on human rights violations were said to be committed by the Syrian government, although according to different human rights organizations and the United Nations, human rights violations can be traced back to the doings of both rebels and the government.
Aside from the conduct of torture and extrajudicial killings, the Assad regime was blamed of using chlorine gas as chemical weapons against the civilians. Other accusations of Assad was about aerial bombardment and shelling which according to reports were indiscriminate and disproportionate that spread terror and led to casualties of civilians that were mass in number. The Free Syrian Army and other rebel groups were also accused of committing war crimes like the recruitment of children to become soldiers, civilian populated areas being shelled, the use of poison gas, and murder of members of religious minorities and taking hostages.
The bloody conflict of Syria is now on its 3rd year, with painful images of civilians attacked by bombs from the air, different abuses, physical assaults and rape on women, and other atrocities that are beyond words and imaginations that led people to write about what is happening in Syria.
News about the conditions in Syria are considered disheartening, with houses, schools, water systems and so on being reduced to rubble, and with 80,000 Syrians dead among which were thousands of children.
If you get to visit a refugee camp in Lebanon, you will see a daunting sight, with people living inside boxes, covering themselves with whatever small pieces of fabric to help them fight the winter cold, and children’s eyes of despair staring at you.
You will hear from women how they lost in just matters of seconds their homes, their lives, careers and practically everything. Brothers, husbands, and sons were lost in the war according to women, not to mention their trauma after being raped. Now, these women would long for nothing else than peace, never minding about their important careers and will not anymore wish for a happy and peaceful life.
Syria and Iran considered themselves as strategic allies and this is a fact that explained how supportive is and why there is presence of Iran in Syria in many ways. Iran has aided the Syrian government during the Syrian civil war since 2011, through the Iranian revolutionary guard, by increasing the level of technical and personnel support so that Syria will have the “ability to deal with protesters”, plus sending equipment to control riots, and giving techniques to monitor intelligence.
